Step 01 - Connect the portal
Purpose
Establishes a secure connection between Business Central and the AppsForDynamics365 cloud, where the TEM web portal and mobile backend are hosted. Without this connection, employees cannot log in to the portal or mobile app, and no expense data can flow between the portal and Business Central.
→ Concept: Expense lifecycle
Before you start
- License Key and Customer ID available - see Prerequisites
- You must be the Global Administrator of the Business Central environment for the consent step
Steps
The wizard normally launches automatically after installing TEM. If it did not, or was closed early:
- In Business Central, search for AppsForDynamics365 Portal Configuration
- Select Configure Connection
Run the AppsForDynamics365 Portal Connector wizard
- Click Next on the welcome page
- Verify your license information and click Next
- When prompted, select Allow Always to permit the external request from AppsForDynamics365
- Grant Consent - this step requires the Global Administrator:
- Select the link to open the Microsoft Entra Application Card
- Click Grant Consent, then Accept on the Microsoft Permission Request window
- Click OK on the confirmation, then close the Entra card
- Click Next
- Localization Settings
- Select the Time Zone for the portal
- Select the Preferred Language (not all languages are supported)
- Click Next
- Method of Authentication - choose how employees will log in:
- Microsoft login - recommended; uses existing Microsoft 365 accounts
- AppsForDynamics365 username and password - for employees without Microsoft accounts
- Mixed mode - allows both methods
- Click Next
- Register Business Central Instance - confirm the displayed information and click Next
- Activate Company - adjust the Company Description if needed, click Test Connection, then Next
- Add TEM Logins (optional) - you can create portal logins for existing Business Central users now or later via the AppsForDynamics365 Login page. Click Next
- Click Finish - the TEM Configuration wizard launches automatically
Decisions that matter here
Authentication method - choosing Microsoft login means employees use existing SSO and no passwords to manage. Choose username/password only if most employees lack Microsoft accounts. Mixed mode adds administrative complexity. See best practices for guidance.
Consent grant - this is a one-time step per Business Central environment. If you skip it or it fails, the portal connection will not work and employees cannot log in.
Validate
After completing the wizard, the Activate Company page should show a successful test connection. If it fails, verify the license key and customer ID, and confirm that consent was granted without errors.
